In order to maximise the value of properties within the 4100 lot Dannemora subdivision, Woods initiated the undergrounding of over head, high voltage Transpower transmission lines. The undergrounding of overhead 110kv power cables through a 2.2 kilometre long, 1.8 metre diameter tunnel was the first project of its type in New Zealand. The subdivision master plan was built up around the most practical tunnel alignment, placing three large access chambers within reserve areas, this allowing the required working space for future energy upgrades and allowing the seamless delivery of the surrounding residential development. The tunnel was constructed through a combination of pipe jacking and cut and cover methods. The Transpower Tunnel was successfully completed on time and within budget in 2000. |
