In association with a portion of the Dannemora subdivision, the Manukau City Council, Dannemora Holdings and Fulton Hogan Limited engaged Woods to design and supervise the upgrade and re-alignment of Ormiston and Murphys Roads in Flat Bush, Manukau. This work included building a major arterial interchange at the intersection of Ormiston and Murphys Roads. The upgrade involved the widening of the road from two lanes to five lanes over a one kilometre stretch, replacement of table drains with kerb and channel, the installation of footpaths, streetlights and traffic signals. A factor that complicated this project was the need to keep the Ormiston/Murphys intersection open to vehicle passage for the duration of the project despite the need to work in the vicinity of trunk watermain, gas and telecommunications services. Watercare Services also had a major valve chamber located within the intersection and providing unimpeded access to these valves post upgrade was critical. Woods facilitated extensive modifications to the existing chamber including the construction of a tunnel access from outside of the upgraded carriageway so as to eliminate the need for Watercare staff to enter the intersection to access the valves. When land acquisition proved difficult and was causing delay to the project Woods took the initiative to realign the road to minimise the impact on adjacent residents, this allowing the land acquisition to be resolved by Council via agreement rather than through lengthy legal processes. Delays in obtaining funding from Land Transport New Zealand for a bridge required within the contract area necessitated the provision of temporary access around the bridge site which Woods designed and facilitated. Subsequent to the bridge being completed by others as a separate contract, Woods project managed the final integration of roading and bridging. Overcoming such issues through imaginative approaches to delivery is a hallmark of Woods operation. Throughout the project co-ordination and co-operation was required with residents, utility operators, Watercare, bridge consultants and the Council, through whom all consents were issued. Woods also provided financial analyses to Council which enabled developer contributions to be calculated for the works in accordance with the District Plan. The road was commissioned in 2008. |
